Because we are a family of two, i am constantly straddling the fine line between taking advantage of sales and stocking up...and...having food go bad because I buy too much to use up.
I have through advice of others, tips I have rad and also trial and error, picked up a few handy tips to share.
1. First of all, storing flour in the freezer, well wrapped and in big bags, really does prolong it's life. An initial storage period kills off bugs eggs (icky to even think about, huh?) but I just keep it in there...it makes a nice layer on the bottom of my deep freeze so I don't have to reach in as far.
2. I buy all the large use "tupperware" containers I find at garage sales in which to store staples like sugar, rice, pasta...keeping these items in airtight containers, rather than original packaging, makes them last as long as I need them to.
3. I was and cut up bargain produce IMMEDIATELY...freezing what I don't need to use right away. If I get lazy about this step, i just end up tossing out that "bargain".
4. Lastly, and this is my favorite, is to use up anything close to it's date, even if I have to make a casserole and give it to a neighbor. When I have an over-abundance, I will make two or three crocks of soup, serve one, freeze one and have one to give away, and that is the best way to use it all up that I know!

Those are some great ideas! I like to keep my food in five-gallon buckets. They hold a ton and don't let air or bugs in.
